I'll answer yourquestions below underneath where you ask them."John A. Zaepfel" wrote:> Hi Phil. This is John from the Pep Band. Here is what I> have on the Pep Band already:> http://www.acsu.buffalo.edu/~zaepfel/UB_Band_History/>> Here are a few questions:>> - What where the exact years that you where in the band and> what was/where your role(s).>I was the Graduate Assistant during three semesters: Fall of 1986, Spring of1987 and Fall of 1987. I worked very closely with the President, TimMaccallini, to plan activities, plan the budget, recruit, and take care ofregular administrative duties (attendance, ordering uniforms, managing thelibrary, etc.). My absolute favorite thing, though, was conducting the bandat games. Sometimes I conducted a whole game by myself.Tim happened to be a good friend of mine and an awesome President, and Ienjoyed working closely with him on the Pep Band. By the way, if you are atall interested in talking to Tim, I can give you his phone number.>> - I know you where a GA for the band but did you ever play in the band as> an undergrad? Tuba?>I was only here for one semester as an undergraduate, during the Fall of1983. I don't remember the Pep Band being very active at the time. I did, however, play tuba in the band and wind ensemble during that semester, as wellas all of the bands when I was a graduate student here.>> - How did you contribute to the band's success and growth?>Tim and I recruited very heavily. We went door to door throughout ALL of thedorms to see if anyone played an instrument! We actually got quite a few tojoin that way! Also, I think that the quality of events (including trips, parties, etc.) really helped people to get excited about being involved. Onething I remember, too, is that we were pretty strict about attendance. Wedidn't want half-hearted participants. That certainly helped.>> - What was the band's size and rough instrumentation?>I believe we started with a pretty small band, but it grew by leaps andbounds. When I left, we were getting about 70 at every rehearsal.Instrumentation, as I recall, was pretty well balanced.>> - What where the standard peices of music that the band performed?>We had alot of favorites. Some that I recall are "Louie, Louie", "PeterGunn", and all of the usual cheers. Unfortunately, my memory doesn't work sowell when it comes to recalling these kinds of things!>> - What venues did the band perform at?>In addition to games, we did an annual concert. We usually tried to do itoutside, near the Student Union.>> - What was the student officer structure?>Similar to what it is now, but smaller, I believe. Tim would probablyremember that stuff better than I would.>> - What was the administration of the Band? Who was the director, advisor,> etc.?>Moose was the Director. Cipolla was the advisor.>> - How much did the Pep Band fall under the UB Band Department and for what> purposes? The Pep Band, even though it was a club, was considered to be part of the UBBand program under Mr. C. He was totally committed to its success. I believeit was always his desire to revitalize the Marching Band. He's probablythrilled with the way things are going now!>> - What social events did the students take part in?>Same kinds of things you guys do now. Parties and trips (away games). But,we were never involved in things like Homecoming parades, Convocation, etc.like you are today.>> - In my searching I found a couple of names that I do not know who they> are or what their significance is. Please let me know what you know> about them:> - "Moose">He was the Director when I was in it. I can't remember his real name! But, Ibelieve he is (or was) a music teacher in the Newfane school system.> - Dr. KunzNot familiar with this name>> - Msgr. (Father) Fisher>I met him on a few occasions.....an interesting guy. He came to a few of theband parties! (Not sure that was the place for a priest!)> - Steve Wallace (I know he organized the Pep Band in the fall> of 1982)Don't know this name.>> - Norm Alexander (I know he was the Pep Band director until spring> of 1996 but when did he start?)>I'm not sure when Norm started. But, he is a Music Teacher at North TonawandaHigh School.>> - If there is any thing else that is significant that you can think of or> that I forgot the ask please let me add it.>I think you were pretty thorough in your questions! Glad to be of help. Itsure brought back alot of good memories thinking through all of this stuff.Keep up the good work, and let me know if I can be of any further help!Phil>> I hope this not to much to ask.
